How much passport validity do I need?
Most countries will not accept a passport that is valid only up to the day you leave. They require a margin of extra validity — commonly six months beyond the day you arrive, sometimes three months beyond the day you leave, and sometimes nothing beyond the length of your stay. The margin is set by the country you are travelling to, not by the country that issued your passport.
What is the six-month passport rule?
The six-month rule means your passport must still be valid for at least six months after the day you arrive. A passport that expires in four months is refused at check-in even though it has not expired yet. It is the most common requirement, but it is not universal, and the countries that apply it do not all count from the same date.
Does the rule count from arrival or departure?
Both exist, and the difference matters on a long trip. Thailand and the United Arab Emirates count six months from the day you arrive. The Schengen area counts three months from the day you intend to leave. On a two-week holiday the two produce almost the same answer; on a three-month stay they do not.
The Schengen 10-year issue-date rule
Schengen countries apply a second, separate test: your passport must have been issued within the 10 years before you arrive. Passports renewed before October 2018 could carry up to nine unused months over from the old book, pushing the expiry date beyond ten years from the issue date. Such a passport can satisfy the three-month requirement and still be refused. The checker tests both conditions. These conditions apply to visitors from outside the EU — an EU citizen needs only a passport or national ID card that is valid on the day of travel.
Which destinations are covered
A small, hand-checked set. Every rule here was read from an official source, which is linked below along with the date it was last checked. Where we have not verified a destination the checker says so instead of guessing — an entry requirement you are about to act on needs to be right, not merely plausible.
What to do if your passport is too short
Renew it before you book, not after. A routine renewal takes weeks in most countries, and the wait grows sharply in the months before summer. If you have already booked, check whether your passport office offers an expedited or emergency appointment — most do, at a higher fee.
