How long must your passport be valid for Japan?
For the length of your stay, and no longer. Japan is one of the few major destinations that asks for no extra margin at all: if your passport is valid on the day you fly home, it meets the requirement.

“If you’re visiting Japan, your passport must be valid for the length of your stay. No additional period of validity is required.”

Japan does not use the six-month rule
The six-month rule — the requirement that a passport stay valid for six months after you arrive — is common enough across Asia that many travellers assume it is universal. It is not, and Japan is the clearest counter-example. A passport that expires three weeks after you get home is enough.
This matters in one specific way: people renew passports they did not need to renew, pay for it, and lose the document for weeks in the process. If Japan is your only destination on this trip, check the actual requirement before you book an appointment.
What you do still need
A blank page for the entry stamp. A passport that is technically valid but completely full can still stop you at the desk, and it is the failure that surprises people most, because nothing about an expiry date warns you about it.
Your passport also has to be genuinely valid — not reported lost or stolen, and not damaged to the point where the border officer will not accept it.
What if your passport expires during the trip?
That is a real problem, and it is the one case where Japan's relaxed rule does not help you. "Valid for the length of your stay" means valid on the day you leave, not the day you arrive. A passport expiring mid-trip fails the requirement, and it also leaves you in Japan holding an expired travel document.
Airlines check this at check-in. You are far more likely to be stopped in your departure airport than at a Japanese border.
If you are travelling on to somewhere else
Japan's rule only covers Japan. If the same trip takes you on to Thailand, Indonesia or most of Southeast Asia, the six-month rule applies there, and it is measured from the date you arrive in that country — not from the date you left home.
A multi-stop itinerary is governed by the strictest rule on it. Check each destination separately.
