How long must your passport be valid for Mexico?

For the duration of your stay — that is the rule. The 180 days often quoted for Mexico is a recommendation from its embassy in the UK, made because 180 days is the longest a tourist can stay. It is advice, not the entry requirement.

“To enter Mexico, your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay. The Mexican Embassy in the UK recommends passports be valid for at least 180 days because this is the longest you can stay in Mexico as a tourist.”

The rule and the recommendation are two different things

Mexico is unusual in that the official advice states both in consecutive sentences. The requirement is that your passport is valid for as long as you are in the country. The recommendation, from the Mexican Embassy in the UK, is 180 days.

It is easy to read the second sentence as though it were the first. A passport with four months left does not break the entry rule for a two-week holiday.

Where the 180 days comes from

It is the longest stay a tourist can be granted. The embassy's reasoning is simple: a passport valid for 180 days covers any stay you could be given, so nobody has to work out whether it covers yours.

That makes 180 days a safe margin rather than a threshold. The checker above tests the rule itself and tells you whether your passport covers your trip; if you prefer the embassy's more cautious figure, compare your expiry date with 180 days after you arrive.

If you are travelling through another country

The official advice for Mexico adds a warning about the journey: check the entry requirements of any country you travel through, because many will only let you in with six months of validity remaining.

Mexico's rule covers Mexico. A connection in another country puts your passport in front of that country's rule as well, and the stricter of the two is the one that decides whether you fly.

What if your passport expires during the trip?

Then it fails the requirement. "Valid for the duration of your stay" means valid on the day you leave, so a passport that runs out while you are there is not a borderline case.

It also leaves you abroad holding an expired travel document. If your expiry date falls anywhere inside your trip, renew before you go.
