How long must your passport be valid for Singapore?
Six months after the day you arrive. Singapore applies the six-month rule in its plainest form, with one exception that goes all the way in the other direction: if you are resident in Singapore, no minimum validity is required at all.

“To enter Singapore, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ 6 months after the date you arrive.”

The six-month rule, counted from arrival
Singapore is where the six-month rule looks exactly the way most people imagine it. Take the day you land, count forward six months, and your passport has to still be valid on that date.
The length of your stay does not change the sum. A weekend visit and a three-month one are tested against the same date — six months after arrival — so a short trip does not buy you any leeway.
Residents need no minimum validity
If you live in Singapore, the six-month requirement does not apply to you. This is a wider exception than most countries give their residents: the UAE, for comparison, lowers its requirement from six months to three, while Singapore removes it.
It is still worth renewing before the passport actually expires. The exception covers getting back into Singapore; it does nothing for the other countries on your itinerary, which will apply their own rules to the same passport.
If Singapore is a stop on the way to somewhere else
The rule quoted on this page is the one for entering Singapore. If you are connecting onward, your final destination has its own requirement, and the two are checked independently.
If you leave the airport on a stopover you are entering Singapore, and the six-month rule applies in full however short the visit. A passport that is fine for Japan or Australia, which ask for no margin beyond your stay, can fall short of it.
If your passport falls short
Renew before you fly. Your airline checks validity at check-in and will not board a passenger whose passport does not meet the destination's requirement, because the airline carries the cost of flying them back.
Routine renewal takes weeks in most countries. If your trip is close, ask your passport authority whether it offers an expedited appointment.
