How long must your passport be valid for Australia?

For the length of your planned stay, with no extra margin. The catch is the journey rather than the destination: many routes to Australia include a stopover, and many transit countries require six months of validity even if you never pass through immigration.

Australia does not use the six-month rule

Australia asks only that your passport stays valid for as long as you plan to be there. A passport that expires a month after you fly home meets the requirement.

Among the destinations covered here, only Japan and Mexico are as relaxed. If Australia really is the only country your passport will be checked against on this trip, there is no reason to renew a passport that covers your dates.

Your stopover may be stricter than your destination

This is the part that catches people, and the official advice for Australia raises it directly. Long-haul routes usually break somewhere, and the country you change planes in applies its own rule to your passport.

Many of them require six months — and, as the advice puts it, even if you are only in transit and do not pass through immigration. A passport that is perfectly acceptable in Sydney can stop you at the gate of your connecting flight.

Check every leg, in both directions

Look up the entry requirement for each country you pass through, and do it for the return journey as well as the outbound one. Your passport is two or three weeks older on the way home, and a route that worked going out can fail coming back.

An itinerary is governed by the strictest rule on it. If any stop requires six months, six months is your real requirement.

What if your passport expires while you are in Australia?

Then it does not meet the requirement. "Valid for the length of your planned stay" means valid on the day you leave, not only the day you arrive.

Airlines check this before you board. A passport that runs out mid-trip is far more likely to stop you at your departure airport than at an Australian border.
