My passport expires soon — can I still travel?

Probably — but not always, and not for the reason most people assume. What matters is not whether your passport has expired. It is how much validity you have left on the day you arrive, and how the country you are visiting counts it.

Does an expiring passport stop you travelling?

Usually not by itself — but it can, and whether it does has nothing to do with whether the passport has expired. Most countries require a margin of validity that extends beyond your trip, and a passport with months left on it can fall short of that margin.

So the question is never “has it expired?”. It is “does it have enough left, measured the way this particular country measures it?” Those are different questions and only the second one matters at the airport.

How much validity do you actually need?

It depends entirely on where you are going, and destinations fall into three groups. Some require six months beyond the day you arrive — common across Asia and the Middle East. Some require three months beyond the day you leave, which is how the Schengen area does it. And some require nothing beyond the length of your stay at all; Japan is the clearest example.

The difference between "beyond arrival" and "beyond departure" is trivial on a short break and significant on a long trip. There is no single answer to carry around in your head, which is why the tool below asks for your dates rather than giving you a rule.

What happens if your passport is too short?

You are stopped at check-in, in your departure airport, by your airline — not at the border of the country you were going to. Carriers are liable for passengers who get refused entry, so they check validity before you board and refuse boarding if it fails.

This is the part that makes it expensive rather than merely inconvenient. The check happens hours before departure, at the point where the flight cannot be changed, the hotel cannot be cancelled and the passport cannot be renewed. Discovering the problem a month out is a chore; discovering it at the desk is the trip.

How quickly can you renew a passport?

Weeks, in most countries, for a routine renewal — and noticeably longer in the months before peak travel periods, when everyone else is checking their passports too.

Most passport authorities also offer an expedited or emergency service at a higher fee, which is the route to take if you are already booked. Exact times and costs depend on the country that issued your passport, so check with your own authority rather than trusting a general figure: the answer for a British passport is not the answer for a German one.

The useful rule is to renew before you book rather than after. It converts a deadline you do not control into one you do.

Does renewing early lose the time you have left?

It used to be common for unused months to carry over to the new passport, and that is exactly what created the Schengen trap: a passport renewed before October 2018 can carry up to nine extra months, pushing its expiry date beyond ten years from its issue date. Schengen countries check the issue date separately, so such a passport can satisfy the expiry rule and still be refused.

If you renewed before October 2018 and are travelling to Europe, look at the date of issue rather than the expiry date. It is the field nobody thinks to check.

How do you avoid this happening again?

The problem is not that passport rules are complicated. It is that an expiry date two years away is invisible until it is three weeks away, and nothing reminds you — a passport sits in a drawer and says nothing as it runs down.

That is the whole reason ExpireNot exists. You photograph the document once, it reads the expiry date, and it tells you at 30 days, 7 days and 1 day — in time to renew calmly rather than expensively. The photo itself is never stored; only the date and type are kept.
